Composing music for films is a lengthy and artistic process. Composers not only draw from other genres and get to apply their talent, but they also have to be excellent storytellers. The music has definitely become a vital part of the story. From suspense and action to romance and triumph, movie scores, video game soundtracks, theme music in series, and more evoke a range of emotions in people, depending on the mood and tone of the scene.
Some of the ideas are kind of inspired by the songs, and I always want to use music to tell the story and give the movie a certain kind of mood. That’s always essential to me. – Wes Anderson

Mood and atmosphere
Music is partly responsible for the emotional response of the audience. Cinema Paradiso, for example, has one of the most beautiful soundtracks. It falls in line with its romantic themes and picturesque setting. Whereas Christopher Nolan’s films usually feature epic scores that are “used to create tension and suspense” which seems more than appropriate in movies like The Dark Knight and Oppenheimer.
Character emotion
A character crying after their entire world has fallen apart might not be as powerful if it was not accompanied by a melody in mourning. Moreover, the wickedness on the face of the antagonist is easier to detect if a song like Annie’s “Little Girls” wasn’t giving away a bit of the badness mixed in with the underlying loneliness.
A Fun Film Score Fact
Film scores are normally written with an orchestra in mind but many movies also include other instruments and sounds.
